Digital Food Works has a new "National Food Celebration Day Calendar" Page!
Just after my big, exciting Aquafresh update, I have another cool little page addition to tell everyone about. It was probably a year ago (maybe a little more) I started taking a closer look at national food celebration days for a client I was working with, and found that most of the single source web sites (where all the dates were in a calendar format), were either very old or very ad-spammy.

So I started collecting all of the dates for my own database and then created a cool looking and useful front-end page so everyone could see upcoming national food days! You can read more below, but if you would like to jump right in and check out the page, here's a direct link (please feel free to bookmark it so you can check upcoming celebration days)…

There's been a little shuffle in our main menu system to accommodate the new page — I have moved the "pricing & what do you do" page under the "contact & more" heading — which is also where the new "national food celebration day calendar two-month view" is located.

I've set this up to be a useful application for those of us that work with any sort of food-related business. Idea number one was to make sure it looked great and remained useful on mobile, tablets, and computers. I did end up adding one footer ad for mobile and two sidebar ads for tablet and desktop — but they're really well behaved ads — there shouldn't be any auto-play video or pop-up type things happening (two pet peeves of mine in the "ad" world).

The calendar grid icons are based around "groups" and not specific items so much. A single "hot beverage" icon is used for all sorts of hot drinks throughout the grid. Could you imagine how cool it would be if these were actual food photos — and then also have it link direct to a recipe! That had been one of the original concepts for the grid, and it's something that can still be done.

This is a rolling "two-month" grid of all the upcoming food celebration days — starting with whatever day "today" is. The grid will always show the current month and day that we're in and also the next full month. Once we're on the last day of any given month, the next new month will be added.

Visually, I used some icon set grouping, so even though it might be "raspberry day" the "fruit based" orange icon will be used. As you can imagine, setting this up to use 365 custom photos would be very, very cool — but also take a very, very long time!

It would be such a great addition to any site that has recipe-based products though! That's really what was at the nexus of creating this application — so that the days would link to recipes, and therein further drive product sales and marketing goals. Maybe one day.

For now and our implementation on the Digital Food Works site — clicking on any title, day name, or icon will open up a new window that automatically does a Google search on that food celebration day! So if you want to know more about "Hot Cross Bun Day" — just click on the name or icon and a new tab will open with all the search results from Google!

If you happen to see any dates that are not where they're supposed to be — or know of any food celebration days that aren't on the schedule yet — please… just let me know!

I'm always on the lookout for great ideas for apps and tools that anyone in the food-related or product-related fields might need — so if you have a great idea for a useful page — I'd like to hear about it! I'm still working on the Digital Food Works Recipe Application — and will let everyone know once that's in place!
